What is looping in video?

30 August 2026 · 4 min read

Looping in video means playing a segment over and over, back to back, so it appears continuous. The segment can be repeated by the player at playback time, or baked into a new file so the repeats are part of the video itself. Both are called looping, but only the second one travels with the file when you share or upload it.

The vocabulary

  • Loop point (or seam): the moment where the end of the segment meets its own beginning.
  • Loop length: how long one pass of the segment runs.
  • Loop duration: how long the finished video runs in total, across all passes.
  • Seamless loop: one where the seam is invisible because the first and last frames match.
  • Hard-cut loop: one where the restart is visible, which is sometimes deliberate for rhythmic or comedic effect.

Player looping vs. a looped export

Player looping is a setting: repeat in VLC or QuickTime, the loop attribute on an HTML5 video tag, or a social platform that restarts a short clip automatically. Nothing about the file changes. A looped export is a new video file that already contains the repeats — a 6-second clip becomes an actual 10-minute video. That is what you need when the destination will not loop for you, or when the runtime has to be exact.

Where looping is used

  • Website hero backgrounds and app onboarding screens.
  • Ambience, study, sleep and focus videos that run for an hour or more.
  • Short-form social content, where a clean loop earns a second view.
  • Digital signage, trade-show screens and menu boards with fixed slot lengths.
  • Higher-quality replacements for animated GIFs.

How to make one

  1. Choose a segment whose first and last frames look nearly identical.
  2. Trim precisely so the boundary frame is not duplicated.
  3. Decide the total runtime you need, rather than a repeat count.
  4. Export a constant-frame-rate file so the joins do not stutter.

Open LoopVideo to trim your clip, set an exact loop length in minutes and seconds, and export a high-bitrate MP4 up to 4K — in your browser, with no upload and no watermark.

Frequently asked questions

What does looping a video mean?
It means repeating a chosen segment back to back so playback continues without an obvious end. The repeats can come from a player setting or be exported into the file itself.
What is a loop point?
The place where the end of the repeated segment meets its start. When the frames on either side match, the loop looks seamless.
Is looping the same as a GIF?
A GIF loops by default but is limited in colours, size and quality. A looped MP4 keeps full colour and detail with much smaller files at the same quality.
Does looping change the video quality?
It should not. When the loop is exported once from the decoded source at a chosen bitrate, the repeats look identical to the original segment.
